Angela offers support to local residents against inappropriate development of Pilley

After carefully considering an application to build more than 70 news homes in the small village of Pilley in the south west of Barnsley, local MP Angela Smith has decided to offer her support to locals campaigning against the plans and has responded to the planning consultation to that effect.

The plans, which are due to be heard by the Council’s planning board shortly, have caused controversy locally . Locals feel the village already has had a number of expansions in recent years and that the sudden development of an additional 5 hectares of land in the village may have negative impacts upon the sense of community in the area. They also feel the development site is in close proximity to both the A61 and the M1, and the additional vehicles from the development would increase significantly the volume of traffic on the very narrow local roads .

There is also a fear that roads would have to be widened to take the extra volume of traffic If the planning application were to be approved. This would result in the destruction of the hedgerows, which are an important part of the ecology of the area. In addition, there are serious concerns about the impact on drainage, with flooding problems already experienced in the area proposed for development.  

Commenting Angela Said;

“I think we all know there is a need for more housing but we do have to make sure any new developments are appropriate and right for the area. I don’t believe that is the case here.

Pilley is small village and the large number of houses in this development would in my view if granted permission would significantly change the area for the worse. It would mean more traffic on roads that are already crowded. They would be built on agricultural land and could exacerbate pre-existing flooding problems.  

For these reasons alone I am asking planning board members to reject this application.”
